United 0 Villareal 0

United could probably afford to drop two points here as both teams are likely to qualify from the group. But it was an unsatisfactory performance, and United certainly didn’t look like a side capable of reaching the final again this season. We lacked the fluency that comes from crisp passing in midfield, which is often the case when both Carrick and Scholes are absent. Even though United had a lot of possesion not many chances were created and the finishing was poor.

The most positive aspect of the game was the return of Ronaldo who looked very sharp when he came on for the last 30 minutes. Hopefully he starts against Chelsea. Man of the match was Darren Fletcher who again proved that he is probably our most underrated player. He will never be one of the first names on the team-sheet, but he’s a brilliant squad player with the added bonus that he tends to lift his game in the big matches.

Ratings:

  • Van der Sar 6  Quiet night. Lucky that the rebound off the post came back straight at him.
  • Neville 5  Wasted a lot of crosses. Will find it difficult to regain his place in the first eleven.
  • Ferdinand 7  Never troubled.
  • Evans 6  Played it safe. Almost scored with a late header.
  • Evra 7  Good going forward, as usual.
  • Park 7  Twice brought down in the box but the ref failed to see the fouls.
  • Hargreaves 6  Not enough creativity.
  • Fletcher 7  Good box-to-box performance.
  • Nani 7  Created space for himself, and his passing seems better than last season. Promising.
  • Tevez 6  Our best player so far this season, but didn’t look dangerous enough in front of goal.
  • Rooney 6  Hard-working but frustrated.
  • Subs:
  • Ronaldo 7  Very promising return.
  • Anderson 6  Perhaps trying the difficult pass a bit too often.
  • Giggs  Not enough time to be rated.
