Arsenal 2 – United 1: Game of the season

Posted by hakanrylander on November 9, 2008

You’re unlikely to see a better game of football all season. I don’t know what tactical plans Wenger and Ferguson had drawn up, but none were evident on the field. This was 90 minutes of all-out attacking football from both sides. Yes, they played the full 90 minutes, even 96, but it felt like 30. I thought I’d never say this, but the quality of the entertainment was so high that I’m not even too disappointed that United lost. Maybe I’m getting old.

I felt Arsenal were marginally the better side and deserved to win, but the main difference between the teams was that Arsenal took their chances and United didn’t. Rooney and Ronaldo in particular wasted good oportunities. Apart from that United’s main problem was in defence where Neville never got hold of Nasri and Vidic and Ferdinand looked uncharacteristically sloppy. Bendtner was twice allowed almost free headers in dangerous positions and Vidic was lucky that the ref didn’t spot him when he brought down Nasri in the penalty area. Another disappointment was that in this kind of game you want the big stars like Rooney, Ronaldo and Berbatov to step forward, but none of them did.

Brilliant goal from Rafael and another good performance from Park who was involved in many of our best moves. He’s probably our most under-rated player.
